Police are left searching for a gun thrown into a Fresno canal after a suspect nearly fled officers Wednesday afternoon.

At around 3:30 p.m., Fresno Police Lt. Charlie Chamalbide says a 27-year-old Bulldog gang member, Adam Abrams, was being pulled over for a traffic violation at First Street and McKinley Avenue by the department’s gang task force and the Department of Homeland Security.

He reportedly wrecked his car, jumped into a canal while throwing the gun into rushing waters. He nearly escaped from the other side of the canal, but officers caught him.

A witness caught the video on his phone. It shows him leaving the canal and attempting to escape into the backyards of nearby homes.

“It’s one way to get away from the police,” Chamalbide says. Adding that a search for the gun may be difficult because the bottom of the canal is smooth, with the possibility of sending it quickly down stream.

If anyone finds the gun once the canal dries up, police ask that you contact the Fresno Police Department at 559-621-7000.

Abrams was taken into police custody.
