Bail for man accused of shooting 10-month-old Fresno infant set for over $6 million

FRESNO, California – Today a Fresno man accused of shooting an infant in the head on Sunday made his first appearance in court.

23-year-old Marcos Echartea’s bail was set at $6.2 million for 16 felony charges. He pleads not guilty.

“By virtue of the fact that bail is set this high of an amount,” said Legal Analyst David Mugridge. “That tells everybody that if they weren’t already aware that this is a very significant case and that the court is very concerned about the crimes that are being charged.”

Several of these charges are attempted murder regarding the shooting last Sunday, where one of the bullets struck 10-month-old baby Fayth Percy in the head. She continues to be in critical condition but Fresno Police said she is expected to live.

Judge Francine Zepeda set Echartea’s Preliminary Hearing for Tuesday, July 9th and said Echartea is not allowed to contact, call or go near any of Baby Fayth’s family.

“That is just to make sure there is no possible contamination of the evidence,” said Mugridge. “That there are no treats to the victims that could impact them one way or another and protect the public at large.”

Echartea’s lawyer declined to comment.
