A Madera man was arrested after authorities say he used a fake Facebook profile to contact a teenage girl and then raped her several times in a van, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
On April 2, a man driving a dark-colored, possibly grey late 1990s or early 2000s model Chevy Astro style van picked up a teenage girl in the city of Madera, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The suspect then drove the girl to a rural area of the county after telling the victim she would be paid to sell fruit at a corner fruit stand.
Once in the area, the suspect told the girl that he had a gun and forced her to undress, after threatening to kill her and her family, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The man then raped the juvenile at three different locations in the area, the Sheriff’s Office said. The girl did not actually see a firearm on the suspect or around the vehicle, but she did see a machete on the floor of the vehicle.
The victim provided a physical description of her attacker during an interview with detectives.
After the information was released to the media, detectives received numerous tips regarding possible sightings of the van depicted in the photo.
During the investigation, detectives discovered several credible leads to possible additional victims, as well as a potential suspect identity.
Detectives later positively identified Carlos Alfonso Bolanos, 22, of Madera, as a subject of interest in the case.
On June 4, detectives located and arrested Bolanos, who was wanted on unrelated probation warrants out of Madera County.
During an interview with detectives, Bolanos confessed to the rape reported in April, the Sheriff’s Office said. He admitted to using a fake Facebook profile with the name “Maritza Martinez” along with a female profile photo, to contact and maintain communication with the victim.
Bolanos was booked at the Madera County Department of Corrections on multiple felony counts of rape of a victim under 18 years of age, lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years, kidnapping for the purpose of committing lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years, and making criminal threats.
He remains in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
Detectives are actively seeking any potential additional victims, male or female, who may have been solicited by the fake profile of “Maritza Martinez,” and assaulted by Bolanos.
Anyone with information, or is a victim in the case, should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 559-675-7770.
