All passengers and a driver involved in last weekend’s hit-and-run in the Tower District have been identified.
Law enforcement officials have also identified the man accused of fighting with the victim and pushing him into the street just before the collision.
They say he’s 24-year-old Chase Popps.
Police tell us he was arrested Tuesday night after he turned himself in with his lawyer. He soon posted a $25,000 bail and has been released.
Police say Popps is facing felony assault charges because the assault lead to John Rodriguez, 36, being struck by a car.
Detectives have also identified the passengers that were in the car with the driver, Jessica Acunia, 23, but their names have not yet been released.
Acunia is accused of hitting Rodriguez while driving a white Chrysler 300 in Fresno’s Tower District in the early morning hours of Sunday.
She is out on bail, police say.
“(Popps) showed up to the police department with his attorney, made contact with the detectives to turn himself in and at that point he was booked into the Fresno County Jail,” says Fresno Police Lt. Mark Hudson.
Police say they were unable to get statements from either of the alleged suspects because their attorneys advised them not to.
Officers say they have identified and spoke with the passengers they say were in the car with Acunia at the time Rodriguez was struck.
As for Popps, police say he is facing felony charges.
There’s no word if any of the passengers are facing charges, police say that’s up to the Fresno County District Attorney.
As for the victim in all of this, police say Rodriguez is still in stable, but critical condition.
