UPDATE: A 12-year-old female was arrested Thursday in connection to making the violent social media threats against Washington Academic Middle School on Wednesday.
The suspect who police say is a resident of Sanger was questioned by detectives and her home was searched for weapons.
“It does not appear she had access to firearms, hence could not likely have carried out the threat. She is being booked into the Fresno County Juvenile Justice Facility on criminal charges related to the threat,” the Sanger Police Department announced in a news release Thursday around 3 p.m.
Anyone with information on this matter is asked to contact Sgt. Rey Carrillo at 559-399-8024.
A Sanger middle school shared on Facebook Wednesday night that their campus was threatened on social media.
The statement by Washington Academic Middle School was posted just before 10 p.m.
It says an unidentified Instagram user posted a picture of a gun and knife, indicating they want to kill someone with the weapons.
The school’s administration and the Sanger Police Department interviewed those who follow the account and asked if they could identify the suspect.
“As a result of this direct threat, Sanger PD will now subpoena the user information in an attempt to locate this user,” the post said.
Sanger Unified administration increased security services including increased surveillance of all WAMS cameras, the post said.
They added, the pictures posted appear to be from other social media sites rather than in the account holders possession.
School officials say they take these matters very seriously and will work diligently to ensure the continued safe learning and working environment for the campus community.
A automated phone call to inform parents about the threat will be made Thursday morning, school officials say.
