Correctional staffers recovering after assault in Corcoran prison

Staffers used 40 mm direct impact rounds and pepper spray to quell the incident

CORCORAN, California - Correctional staff members were attacked by inmates at California State Prison, Corcoran on Monday, and they are recovering, prison officials said.

Custody staff conducted a cell search on the second tier of a building on Facility C just before noon, and ordered inmates to step back into their cell while they restrained and removed them, prison officials said.

After the first inmate was escorted to a lower tier, the second inmate backed up to the cell door, turned around and pulled an officer into the cell, prison officials said. An inmate incited others to join the attack and several rushed the area.

A correctional counselor pepper sprayed inmates who attempted to join the fray, prison officials said. The unit alarm was activated and additional staff arrived as four inmates were battering the first officer. Staff also used 40 mm direct impact rounds to quell the incident.

The two staff members who got the worst of the initial assault were transported to a hospital, but their injuries weren't life threatening.

Four inmates were treated by prison medical staff for minor injuries.

The incident is being investigated.
