FRESNO COUNTY, California (KGPE) – We are getting a first look at the 19-year-old Fresno woman who was arrested in a crash that left a bicyclist dead Thursday night.
Authorities say she’s 19-year-old Savannah Gomez.
She reportedly told investigators she was blinded by the sun as it was setting and didn’t see the 52-year-old bicyclist who was riding legally in the road.
He died at the scene.
People gathered at the Sihk temple saying they are in complete shock, and are working to find out the name of the man with hopes of comforting the family. The 19-year-old driver’s family is also speaking out, saying she is also devastated.
Drugs and/or alcohol are not a factor in the crash.
“They must be very sad that this is happened,” says Amrik Singh Virk, secretary of Sikh Center of Pacific Coast California. “We are all very sad.”
Community members gather at the Sikh Center in Selma, all heart broken to hear about the Indian tourist killed.
“The bicyclist was thrown onto the roadway and he was pronounced dead at the scene,” says California Highway Patrol spokesperson Mike Salas.
At Mountain View and McCall avenues, fire trucks, patrol cars and ambulances arrived on the side of the road, leaving behind a broken bike and one black shoe.
“It is a sad situation not only with the victim, it is a sad situation for the driver and her family as well,” Salas says.
Gomez was taken to Fresno County Jail and released about an hour and a half later. She faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license.
Gomez’s mother says their family is devastated and is receiving a lot of negativity on on social media.
