The Madera County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man authorities say shot his mother and her boyfriend Friday night. His mother is still recovering in a local hospital as of Saturday night, while her boyfriend has passed away.
The shooting happened outside of a home off Little John Drive close to Robinhood Drive in Coarsegold around 7:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office has since arrested and charged Jacob Burdett, 25, with murder and attempted murder.
Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney said Burdett fired a rifle at his mother and her boyfriend in anger from a boiling family feud.
“Apparently this started about a week ago,” he said. “A portion of the family moved out of the residence. That [same] portion apparently was on their way back up here and got in an altercation.”
In the past, Burdett, his mother and her boyfriend all lived at the house together. At some point, his mother moved out with her boyfriend.
Burdett’s mother was airlifted to a hospital Friday after getting treated by paramedics on-scene.
No one involved has had any run-ins with the law, according to Varney, and that this issue is exclusively a family one.
“There’s no danger to anyone else. There’s no outstanding victims or folks who were in either of the vehicles, everyone was accounted for. Just kind of a crazy scene for an Easter weekend,” he said.
Varney said in his county victims in these kind of cases typically know the suspect – which can make these cases even more tragic.
“It’s just proof that sometimes problems where you live – in this case a family getting on each other’s nerves – sometimes folks don’t deal with it real well,” said Varney. “It really built up to some type of tragic event like this.”
Burdett has been booked into Madera County Department of Corrections. Both of his charges have him on a $1 million bond.
The sheriff’s office has already interviewed multiple witnesses, but if you know anything about this you can call them at 559-675-7770.
