Clovis PD looking for man seen grabbing a bat after attacking other players during game of pickup basketball

Clovis Police are looking for a man seen on surveillance video grabbing a bat after allegedly making death threats and attacking people in a rec center.

It started during an all adult sports league activity at the Clovis Recreation Center around 6 p.m Tuesday.

Sgt. Vince Weibert said several men were playing basketball and it got heated. He said there was trash talking going on and the suspect lost it.

Weibert said the suspect hit two smaller players who were 19 to 20-years-old. He then made death threats towards them and others in the group.

Police said he went outside and grabbed a bat from his car, then went back inside the rec center.

Weibert said the suspect was going after one of the young men he had previously hit, and the victim got away by hiding in the building.

When the suspect could not find the victim, police said he took off.

“Because he was unable to manage his emotions or control himself some people got hurt and became very fearful that it could’ve become a lot worse, and it could have been worse if he had located that original victim,” Weibert said.

Police are now looking for the suspect. He’s described as a black male about 40 years old, 5’9″ to 5’10” inches tall. He has tattooes and is bald with a goatee. He’s seen driving a white or silver newer model Chevy sedan.

Anyone with information is asked to give Clovis Police a call (559) 324-2800.
