FRESNO COUNTY, California (KSEE) – A child, 8, nearly drowned in the Kings River in Fresno County Sunday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

At around 4:30 p.m., he was pulled from the river near Lincoln and Lac Jac avenues by helicopter, and transported by ambulance to Reedley Hospital.

Investigators say the boy and his family were all tied together, wearing life jackets, but he was swept away in the current of the river and got caught in the brush.

His dad rescued him, pulling him to safety on an island.

“We have word he was underwater five to 10 minutes before they broke him lose, the father was able to swim him over to a center island in the middle of the river,” says Sgt. Robert Carey with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

By 7:30 p.m., he was flown from Reedley to Valley Children’s Hospital.

He is in critical condition.
