The Athletes as Readers and Leaders program at Central High School is celebrating its 10-year anniversary.
Janet Wile, Supervisor of Library Services at Central USD, started Athletes as Readers and Leaders 10 years ago with only seven football players. Today, over 100 student-athletes in football, basketball, volleyball, water polo, golf and other sports, including Folkloric dance, participate in the program.
Athletes as Readers and Leaders program allows student-athletes to interact face-to-face with elementary school students, read to them and collaborate on ideas, ultimately engaging them in essential conversations about health and the importance of picking up a book.
More than 35,000 students have been read to throughout the program’s history.
