On your side: Fresno city leaders help 100-year-old woman with cracked water pipe

CBS47 On Your Side

100-year-old Corine Reed is on a fixed income.

She couldn’t understand why her water bill jumped from around $70 a month to more than $300 in just 5 months.

Reed says, “It’s been hard. I found out the water pipe burst because of the tree in the front. It’s very expensive, oh yeah very expensive.”

Reed and her daughter, Aline Reed, contacted the city but claims they got the run around.
The family says a sidewalk leak was visible around September 2018 and the water bill increased quite a bit.

After contacting Fresno City Councilman Miguel Arias’ District 3 office, Aline claims it was agreed that the corner tree at Bardell and Belgravia would be removed and another less invasive tree would be planted.

But Aline says she was later told it’s an expensive operation and that it may “take a while.”

When Aline asked about the City of Fresno repairing the sprinkler pipes that were damaged due to the City’s tree, She says she was informed by Arias’ staff that this would not be possible.

Civil rights leader Rev. Floyd Harris Junior held a press conference outside the home on Tuesday, highlighting what he claims is discrimination.

CBS47 spoke with Fresno City Councilman Arias, he assures Investigative Reporter Erik Rosales, that crews will remove the tree on April 23, 2019.

It will cost $750, which Arias says his office will pay for out of his own budget.

CBS47 also contacted the city of Fresno, and within an hour city crews were out at the home.

Workers determined the leak was in the service line to property, past the water meter, which is technically the homeowners responsibility to fix.

But Fresno Spokesman, Mark Standriff told CBS47 by phone, “The city of Fresno will do everything we can to help her.”

Reed says, “They should fix it because I can’t afford it.”

Councilman Arias also assured CBS47 the homeowner will be credited for any excess water the tree roots caused, including the $321 bill.
