Investigation update: Changes made at worrisome intersection

CBS47 Investigates

We have an update to an Eyewitness News investigation we brought you a few weeks ago. We followed up complaints from viewers about the intersection of Del Rey and McKinley and learned people were seriously injured and even killed in crashes since the start of the year. Now, significant changes have been made aimed at making the area safer.

When we came out to see this intersection a few weeks ago there were two stop signs and that was it.  Now, in the days following our investigation county crews listened to concerns and have added signage, red on the pole, new paint on the road, and even this solar light that flashes to warn drivers of this two way stop.

The families we talked to who had their lives changed by crashes at this intersection of Del Rey and McKinley say these changes mean the world to them.

After months of wanting for change this was done just five days after we did a story with their help and they tell me these changes will save a life.

“I want to thank channel 47 and Patrick Nelson so much for stepping up and doing what a journalist is supposed to do and really look into a story and see what happens,” said Tricia Hargrove-Jackson who lost her husband in a crash at the intersection this summer.

“It has helped me by you guys coming out and doing this story that I know something can be done by these investigations. That something can be done by getting the word out,” said Rachel Freeman, who was injured in one of the dangerous crashes at Del Rey and McKinley since the start of 2018.

Residents tell me while these changes are a big improvement they are hoping at some point Del Rey and McKinley can become a four way stop.

While we are pleased to see our investigation brought about some change, we too will continue to monitor crashes here to see if more change is needed, but for now people who live and work out here say this is a change that can make these roads much safer.
