Caught on camera: Suspected DUI driver slams into car near Madera officer writing citation

New body camera footage out of Madera.

A DUI crash happened just feet away from an officer writing a citation on Sunday night.

The Madera Police Department hopes the video makes people think twice about drinking and driving and is a reminder to be aware of your surroundings.

The DUI driver plowed into a parked car, pushing it out of the road and into a tree around 9 p.m.

It happened in the 400 block of South B Street.

“The person was so intoxicated, there was no stopping or slowing of the vehicle,” said Commander Gino Chiaramonte. “It was full speed right into the vehicle and it deployed all air bags.”

A portion of the video has been viewed thousands of times on Facebook.

“Disappointed. Mad. Like I said, I’m glad no one got hurt,” said Cynthia Cardona who works across the street from where the crash happened.

“We didn’t imagine it was our truck because it was just parked out there,” said Alma Godinez who heard the sound when she was in bed.

The officer that witnessed the crash was off-duty as we were doing interviews for our story but Commander Chiaramonte tells us, some years back, a DUI driver slammed into the back of his patrol car while he was also writing a citation.

“Absolute shock, you’re not expecting it,” Commander Chiaramonte said.
The Madera Police Department says too many people are choosing to drink and drive.

“We make multiple arrests on weekend nights for DUI.”

“It’s just nothing new here in Madera. It’s just something that always happens,” Cardona added.

But if that parked car wasn’t there Sunday evening, the officer could have been badly hurt.

“Now you can’t even feel safe having your cars parked outside,” Godinez added.

The driver, Enedino Ramirez-Morales went to jail for DUI and for not having a license.

No one was hurt in the crash.

The owner of the SUV tells us her car now isn’t working but that she does have car insurance.
