The Casa de Tamales downtown location at the Fulton Mall is temporarily closing.
“It wasn’t an easy decision to make but it was necessary,” said Liz Sanchez, Owner.
The announcement was made Thursday in a Facebook post.
Sanchez says she is temporarily closing because the southside portion of the Fulton Mall is nearly complete but won’t be open to the public until the entire project is done.
“It’s not encouraging for pedestrians to come through and take a look at what could be the final piece of the block,” said Sanchez.
Mark Standriff with teh city says Sanchez has a great relationship with them and he’s hate to see her close her doors.
Unfortunately, Standriff says the Fulton Mall is months away from being complete.
“We’re probably looking at mid summer,” said Standriff.
That time frame doesn’t work for Sanchez, but Standriff says he’s hoping the city will be able to work something out to help all the businesses on that southern end where the restaurant in located.
“It may not take us much to be able to move to opening up street traffic up to a point,” said Standriff. “The entire street will never be open until the grand opening.”
For Sanchez she just wants to re-assure her customers that that location will open again when the Fulton Mall is complete. Until then she says none of her employees will lose their job they’ll all re-locate to the Casa de Tamales location on Olive Street in Tower District which will be the only location open for business.
“I am grateful for the support i’ve received, you know we’ve been in business for seven years and this is a hurdle we need to overcome,” said Sanchez.
Sanchez will still participate in Art Hop this Thursday at the downtown location, but will remain closed for daily business until Fulton Mall is complete.
