President Donald Trump took to Twitter Wednesday night to criticize the California High-Speed Rail a day after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced major plans to scale back the size of the project.
Trump says the rail authority owes the federal government three and a half billion dollars.
“We want that money back now,” his tweet reads.
On Tuesday, Newsom announced during his State of the State address the rail will now be constructed from Merced to Bakersfiled, a large departure from the previous plan of the line running from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
He says abandoning that portion of the project would require the state to return $3.5 billion in federal dollars, the money Trump is now requesting back.
Newsom is also is replacing Brown’s head of the board that oversee the project and is pledging to hold the project’s contractors more accountable for cost overruns.
California has been forced to cancel the massive bullet train project after having spent and wasted many billions of dollars. They owe the Federal Government three and a half billion dollars.
