Man, 37, dies at Oceano Dunes after crash with alleged DUI driver

California

Nearly a week later, California State Parks confirmed another Oceano Dunes death over the weekend.

On Saturday, June 22, around 7:30 p.m., park rangers responded to a crash involving an ATV, at a dune about 35-feet high.

Rangers and lifeguards responded to the scene and found a man not breathing and without a pulse. They began performing CPR. EMS arrived about 15 minutes later and pronounced the victim deceased.

He’s identified as Shawn Josef Imlig, 37, of Brentwood.

The crash happened when a 34-year-old named Oscar Renteria Corchado was reportedly driving an ATV between 20 to 30 mph up the face of the dune and went airborne at the top.

That’s when Imlig was going about 10 to 15 mph and he met Corchado midair, hit his helmet, causing fatal injuries.

Authorities say they were wearing helmets at the time of the collision and both vehicles were equipped with a whip and flag.

Corchado was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury and vehicular manslaughter.

The San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office responded to take over the death investigation.

The last reported death at the dunes was May 26, when a man from Tulare was killed.
