A police pursuit ended in a fiery crash Monday in Whittier, California.

It started around 11 a.m. when a police officer witnessed an alleged road rage incident.

Officials say the driver took off when an officer attempted to make a traffic stop. That vehicle led police on a short chase. During the pursuit the suspect attempted to ram into multiple patrol cars.

The chase ended shortly after the suspect slammed into an innocent motorist; the car quickly burst into flames.

Both the suspect and the other driver were taken to hospitals. The suspect– identified as 34-year-old Kevin Vargas is in stable condition. He is expected to be booked into jail.

However, the uninvolved driver has since died from his injuries. His identity has not yet been released.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
