Grapevine reopens after snow, accidents force closure stranding thousands

California

After a closure that stranded thousands of drivers, the Grapevine reopened Monday, the California Department of Transportation said.

Caltrans said drivers should be careful as there’s still ice on the road.

Crews were working frantically to clear the Interstate 5 through the Grapevine after it was shut down Sunday night.

Just before midnight, the southbound side was reopened, with California Highway Patrol running escorts for drivers.

A little before 11:30 a.m., Caltrans announced the roads were open in both directions. The California Highway Patrol said they’d begun northbound escorts.

Valley residents driving to and from Southern California were also effected by the Grapevine’s closure.

The Avenal Boxing Club was stranded in Castaic by the closure and were waiting for northbound lanes of the I-5 to reopen.

Area hotels in and around Lebec Sunday night quickly filled up to capacity with stranded travelers.

The National Weather Service reported that up to 4 inches of snow fell in the Grapevine Sunday.
