Correctional officer attacked by eight inmates, CDCR says

California

DELANO, California (KSEE/KGPE) –  The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said a correctional officer is recovering from injuries he sustained when he was attacked by eight inmates.

Officials said the incident happened at the North Kern State Prison last Friday when the officer was conducting his security checks and found an inmate with a contraband cell phone.

The CDRC says an inmate attacked the officer and seven other inmates joined in the attack and punched and kicked the officer.

Responding correctional officers said they used pepper spray and a 40mm launcher to stop the attack.

The officer was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

He was released and is expected to recover.
