CA Dems endorse marijuana initiative

California Democrats have endorsed a ballot initiative that would legalize recreational marijuana. It’s a first for a major political party in the state. he adult use of marijuana act would make it legal for people 21 and older to grow or use pot. Smoking in public or while driving would still be illegal and the state would regulate and tax any commercial operation.

California Democrats have given a ballot initiative legalizing recreational marijuana an official endorsement. Longtime democrat Jay Hubbell expects it to pass.

“I think it’ll pretty much be a slam dunk at the ballot box in the Fall,” said Hubbell.

The Adult Use of Marijuana Act would make it legal for Californians ages 21 and older to possess, transport and use up to an ounce of marijuana for recreational purposes. It would also allow people to grow up to six plants indoors.
“The downsides, whatever they’ve been in Colorado aren’t significant, so I think the plusses outweigh the minuses on this. I think people will be for it,” said Hubbell.

Attorney Brenda Linder defends people charged with growing marijuana.

“We have a no tolerance law here in Fresno County and the City of Fresno, said Linder.

She worries the initiative does not go far enough while recreational marijuana use would be legal across the state Linder says cities and counties will have the right to opt out of legalizing growing and retail operations.

“You can lawfully posses an ounce, but where are you getting it from? Where are you getting it from? It’s not legal to buy it, or grow it here,” said Linder.

If laws on marijuana change democrats like Hubbell believe Fresno’s view of the drug will change too.

“Even if our local environment here, our local political leaders won’t allow it to happen here I think once they see it is workable everywhere else in the state I think eventually they will go along,”

Opponents of legalizing marijuana say the state does not have the capacity to properly regulate marijuana. The California Police Officers Association is concerned potent marijuana will be sold that will lead to high addiction rates and dangerous hallucinations.
