Breaking Ground at Site of Amazon Fulfillment Center

Online retailer Amazon is slated to open a fulfillment center in Fresno. It is expected to bring over one thousand jobs to the region. On Monday, the city broke ground at the proposed site, which is located near Central and Orange Avenues.

The fulfillment center is expected to open this time next year. Fresno Mayor Lee Brand said the Amazon fulfillment center is going to look identical to the one in Seattle. It’s going to be more than 850,000 thousand square feet and four stories high.

Kelvin Downes is the West Coast Operations Director for Amazon. He kicked off the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday morning.

“Help us break ground on Amazon’s new, latest fulfillment center right here in Fresno,” Downes cheered.

Brand called Monday a great day for the City of Fresno.

He said, “Amazon and Ulta are the start of many other businesses and e-commerce centers coming here.”

Downes said all the jobs that are coming will give locals the chance to excel.

“We are very proud of our ability to create more than 1,500 full time jobs that will receive competitive wages, comprehensive benefits, starting on day one,” stated Downes.

Brand said it is even in the contract that Amazon must reserve a certain number of hires for Valley natives. The Mayor said within time, Amazon hopes to bring in 2,500 hundred jobs.

“Amazon, thank you. Thank you for choosing Fresno!” exclaimed Brand.

Amazon said it is committed to growing it’s company in the Central Valley, and they also want to give back to the community. At the groundbreaking ceremony, the online retailer announced it’s donation of $10,000 to the Fresno County Library. That check was matched by the real estate firm Dermody Properties.

So, what does this new and very large fulfillment center mean for you, the consumer?

Downes ended, “What that means is, more faster shipment methods to our customers, and some cases where it used to take hours, we will now be shipping an item from the time you press click, we’ll hopefully have it in the truck in minutes.”
