‘Badly decomposing’ body found in Merced cornfield

A grisly discovery in Merced County Thursday when a dairy worker found what the Merced County Sheriff’s Office described as a “badly decomposing” body in the middle of a cornfield.

A worker at J&T Dairy alerted the sheriff’s office immediately after finding the body around 7 a.m. The cornfield is by Sandy Mush and Combs Road, in between the dairy and the Juvenile Justice Correctional Complex.

Deputy Daryl Allen said the body’s state of decomposition made the person completely unidentifiable.

“We’re not sure how long the body had been there,” said Allen.  “Animals, bugs and everything else kind of plays a factor in trying to identify this body.”

Including our unseasonably hot summer. Allen said the coroner’s office is trying multiple methods to figure out who this person is, including ways of re-hydrating skin and doing dental impressions.

The sheriff’s office is doing the same. Detectives are currently looking at recent missing persons cases and other crimes in the area to find any possible ties — hopefully leading to an ID and closure for a case.

“A few weeks ago there was a vehicle accident out in the area and nobody was found,” Allen said.

If you have any information regarding this case, you can call the Merced County Sheriff’s Office at 209-385-7451.
