Armed man killed in officer-involved shooting in Los Banos

LOS BANOS, California - A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Los Banos.

Los Banos police say they got a call around noon from a city employee and a local landscaper who encountered an armed man in the area of 7th and G street near the community center.

When officers arrived they made contact with the man. While talking with officers the man told the two officers he had a weapon on him. As their discussion went on police say the man refused to listen and comply with their commands, such as raising his hands up and going on his knees.

The man later lifted his shirt with one hand and began to take out his gun from his waistband. In response, one of the officers fired one round at the man, striking him in the abdomen.

Medics were called and the man was transported to the hospital where he later died.

The identity of the man has not yet been released.

Police tell us no one was around at the time of the shooting. They are looking into surveillance video of the shooting.

The two officers will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
