26 rounds fired and a woman in a critical condition in Fresno shooting, police say

FRESNO, California (KGPE) – A woman is in a critical condition in the hospital after a late-night shooting in Fresno. Officers say 26 rounds were fired in the incident, but do not know what led up to it.

The alert came around 9:45 p.m. in the area of Kern Street and Mayor Avenue. Fresno Police’s Shotspotter picked up the shooting before multiple 911 calls confirmed it.

Officers say there were no victims or independent witnesses at the scene, but soon received a report of a young woman who had been checked into CRMC in Downtown Fresno. She had already been taken into surgery for a gunshot wound to the torso and it is believed her injuries relate to this incident.

Officers and detectives have begun canvassing the neighborhood for information.

“The only witness that we’ve spoken to so far said they heard gunshots,” said Lt. Bill Dooley.

“When they heard the gunshots they saw a vehicle driving northbound down the alley to the parking area, which is where the shooting took place, but they did not see any shots being fired from that vehicle.”

Officers are asking for any surveillance video local residents may have of the incident and have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
