A 12-year-old boy was shot and killed after deputies say he and a friend were playing with a gun Sunday afternoon.

Fresno County sheriff’s deputies responded to an accidental shooting on the 600 block of N. Fairfax near Firebaugh.

Sargeant Mike Nulick said the two kids were playing with a 25 caliber semi-automatic outside of the home.

“One of the 12-year-old boys was visiting with a friend at this house here..the other 12-year-olds house and the mother was in the city of Mendota when the shooting happened,” Nulick said.

Medics tried to revive the child but the 12-year-old victim was pronounced dead on scene.

“It seems like it was an accident at this point. It’s an unfortuante event, terrible thing to see,” Nulick said.

Investigators said the gun was not registered.

“There are some new laws in place recently within this last year so that actually say they have a responsibility as gun owner to lock up the guns either with a lock or a safe..it is their responsibility. There could be some criminal charges facing if they’re not probably storing their firearms,” Nulick said.

One neighbor told Your Central Valley that the 12-year-old boy would visit the family often.

The name of victim has not been released.
