Terry’s House is always in need of volunteers, and sometimes, even those who already work within Community Medical Centers step up to volunteer their time to the families.
This week’s Healthcare Hero is Community Regional Medical Center’s security officer Abigail Galindo. Abigail is a team lead and oversees about 20 officers during her swing shift. The security officers provide transportation for patients and employees, and they also guard around areas of the hospital, including Terry’s House. It’s there where Abigail says she and other officers have gotten to know the families well, and they wanted to serve them.
“We just got really close to the staff here and the guests. A lot of the guests here stay unfortunately for many, many weeks, so it’s sad to see, and you know, they’re going through so many things and you build like a little relationship with them because you see them every day. You drop them off and you pick them up and we already know where they need to go,” stated Abigail. She continued, “I had 16 people that stayed, volunteered their time, and they said, ‘You know, let’s make this happen’, so we decided on breakfast burritos. Everything handmade, except the tortillas!”
Aaron Washington is a security director at Community Regional. He said, “Abby is our, she’s our, I would call her our event coordinator, and so she frequently organizes potlucks for our department. I would say that she promotes camaraderie amongst the team and we’re just really grateful to have her on staff.”
