Every week in partnership with the Tulare County Office of Education, we tell stories about South Valley students with great character.
At West Putnam Elementary School in Porterville, Lizbeth Martinez is a 4th grade student who stands out as a kid of character.
Her 4th grade Teacher, Becky Perez said:
“When she walked into the room the first day I knew she would excel. She is kind, she is attentive, and she works hard with every single thing she does.”
Words that come to mind when people talk about Lizbeth are trustworthy and having perserverance.
“Liz just gives above and beyond. She takes care of her little sister here at school. She respects teachers. She is respectful to everyone at school — the cafeteria ladies. She is a terrific person to be around. I am so glad she is in my class,” Ms. Perez adds.
In the classroom, Lizbeth is relied on to give honest information when a substitute teacher takes over the class.
“Kids should be following the rules and doing their work,” 5th grader, Lizbeth Martinez said.
Lizbeth knows the value of integrity and why words matter.
“You’ve got to be honest because if you tell a lie than people won’t believe you anymore and they won’t have trust in you. So it’s better to tell the truth and no lies,” Lizbeth adds.
She also knows the importance of keeping a promise and always follows the classroom rules. Inspiring her fellow classmates to follow her lead.
“She tells me, ‘Don’t tell lies. Don’t be rude to other people. Don’t do the same thing as others. Don’t do inappropriate things. And to do the right thing’,” her classmate Gisell Magallanes said of Lizbeth.
