Your Character Matters: Granite Hills High School Special Friends Day

Central Valley Today

Every week in partnership with the Tulare County Office of Education, we tell stories about South Valley students with great character.

The rain did not keep Granite Hills High School students in the Academy of Careers in Education Pathway from volunteering at the Porterville Fair this year.

The event was “Special Friends Day” at the Porterville Fairgrounds. Students with special needs were invited to attend the fair – many for the first time.

“You see their faces as they walk into the Fair, and you see them so excited to see something so big. Something they have never seen before,” said Granite Hills High School 10th grader, Ali Starling.

Granite Hills High School students painted the faces of kids with special needs. In fact, the gray weather made the colors on the faces even brighter.

“I love their faces of saying thank you, even if we didn’t do amazing, they are so excited to know that we care for them,” Ali added. “I’ve been working with Special ED students since I was in 7th grade and seeing those smiles, seeing those faces, I wish I could see those faces everyday.”

Pinks, purples, yellows, and blues — despite the cold, the event was full of warmth.

“It makes my heart overwhelmed because our kids love to give back and that’s what life is all about. Not what we have but what we can give back,” said Coach Rich Lambie, an Advisor of the Granie Hills High School Academy of Careers in Education Pathway.

The students gave up their free time, to make a memorable fair moment for someone else.

“Because I am passionate about my community and giving back to the people around you. It’s about putting your needs last and other people’s needs first,” said Sophia Biagio, a 9th grade student of Granite Hills High School.

Nothing could rain on this parade of character and service to others.

“My actions today show that just because we may not look the same, we are all equally important and equally the same,” Ali said.
