This day in Bulldog history: the cover of Sports Illustrated

Bulldog Sports

On this day 18 years ago, Fresno State (and in particular, David Carr) was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

September 17th, 2001.

The Bulldogs had just beaten Wisconsin for their second win of the season over a Top-25 team.

The text on the cover read, “Fresno? Yep. Unheralded Fresno State is knocking off college football’s big boys.”

“It’s nice. I never thought that I would open the mailbox and see myself on Sports Illustrated, but it happened,” Carr said back in 2001, a few days before the issue hit newsstands. “So, I mean, you just gotta go with it. You always dream about it, and you draw yourself on Sports Illustrated, or you draw yourself on ESPN, but you never think it’s actually going to happen. But it actually has, so it’s nice.”

Fresno State would go on to finish that season with a record of 11-3. The following year, David Carr was the No. 1 pick in the 2002 NFL Draft.
