Once upon a time, Jeff Tedford played for the Fresno State football team. He was the Bulldogs’ quarterback from 1981-1982.
In 1986, Troy Calhoun was the quarterback at Air Force.
Those two individuals are now the head coaches at their respective alma maters: Calhoun since 2007, Tedford since 2017.
On Saturday in Colorado Springs, when Air Force hosts Fresno State, Tedford and Calhoun will be on opposite sidelines.
“I think it’s really a great honor to go back to your alma mater and not just take your playing days, but the pride and tradition of what it stands for,” says Tedford. “And to be able to be a part of it, I think, is pretty special. I’ve known Troy (Calhoun) for awhile. Troy is a great coach and has done a phenomenal job with that program. And he’s all about the academy and is a great fit for that place.”
Jeff Tedford and Troy Calhoun are two of just 18 head coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision to be coaching their alma maters.
