FRESNO, Calif. – The sign says it all: H. Markus & Co. Since 1965.
So, Harry Markus has been in the printing business for 54 years. But his degree is in biology!
“And my first job out of college was with Britz Chemical out in Five Points,” he said. “Then I went on to be a pharmaceutical salesman for Abbott Laboratories. Then I was offered a job with a printing company.”
Initially, Harry Markus said, ‘no.’ And ‘no’ again. It wasn’t until he was offered part ownership that he said, ‘yes.’
“Now I’m listening,” he smiles. “So my parents mortgaged their house, gave me the money, and I bought into the company, ValPrint. And that started in April of ’64.”
The rest, as they say, is history. That’s how Harry Markus got his start in printing. Bob Duncan is how he got his start with the Bulldog Foundation.
“Bob called me, took me to lunch and he showed me his presentation,” said Markus. “What the foundation is all about and what they were doing.
“I’ve always been a Bulldog. So I said, ‘sure!'”
Eventually, Harry Markus would become president of the Bulldog Foundation. And, in 2010, he earned the foundation’s lifetime achievement award.
“The Bulldog Foundation is a bunch of guys and women that just loved what we did regarding the Bulldogs,” said Markus. “Football and basketball, whatever it happened to be. I’m just pumped to think about basketball. When Jerry Tarkanian came to Fresno State, that was like a wave of excitement in the whole community. I think Fresno State’s success is something that really pulls together the energy of everyone in this valley.”
