Researchers, doctors and members of the community got together to tackle the issue of Valley Fever.

The illness is caused by a fungus in the soil that people breathe into their lungs and causes respiratory problems.

Professor Paul Brown with UC Merced says around 20,000 cases are detected every year in the San Joaquin Valley, Arizona and Texas.

"It starts off as an infection that many people feel is sort of like the flu and in a small number of people it develops into a more serious illness like meningitis and symptoms that mirror tb," says Bown.

Scientists from UC Merced, UC San Francisco and Fresno State are trying to figure out the best ways to prevent, detect and treat valley fever.
