Movies, musicals, orchestras and more! There's a lot going on this weekend in the Central Valley. Here's a handful of suggestions to do with the family in this week's High Five:
-Fresno Filmworks open its 2014 season Friday at the Tower Theatre. The award-winning Italian drama "The Great Beauty" will be the feature presentation. The group brings independent films to Fresno that filmgoers would otherwise not get a chance to see. Showtimes start at 5:30 and 8:45. It's $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and kids.
-Dr. Doolittle, Jr. is also taking center stage this weekend in Fresno. The musical tells the classic tale of a wacky, but kind doctor who can talk to animals. It's being performed by students at California Arts Academy on Blackstone Avenue. There are six performances: the next two Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
-Here's another way to get your kids interested in the arts. The Fresno Philharmonics will present a Young Artist Concerto Competition. Fourteen musicians on a variety of instruments, all under the age of 22, will perform for a panel of judges. The winner will be invited to perform with the Fresno Philharmonic. It's this Sunday from 11am-3:30pm at Clovis North Campus's Concert Hall. The concert is free to the public.
-Get involved in local agriculture life by going to the 18th Annual Red Wave Classic Junior Livestock sale. The sale this year is featuring steers, lambs and --for the first time-- meat goats. The sale is being held at the Fresno State Animal Science Pavilion Saturday. The previewing of the animals starts at 10am. Sales begin at noon.
-And we're winding down to the last couple of weekends to go ice skating in Downtown Fresno. There are only two weekends left. The ice rink on the Fulton Mall opens everyday at 11am. Weekend ticket prices for kids are $10 and $12 for adults.
