Fresno Powerball Winner is Named

Carlo Mitchell is the winner of the $213 million Powerball jackpot, according to California Lottery officials.
California Lottery officials have named Carlo Mitchell of Fresno as the winner of the $213 million Powerball jackpot.

Monday, he claimed his prize in Sacramento. He had planned to have a press conference to come forward publicly but cancelled it last minute, according to lottery officials. However, lottery officials released his name because California law requires that name to be public.

His next door neighbor, and friend of more than 15 years, said she was surprised when Mitchell broke the news.

"They came over Thursday to tell us. [It's] overwhelming, amazing. I think they're in shock, too," Kina Cortez said.

Cortez added that she doesn't think having that much money will change her friend.

"He's a smart guy. He has good friends, and I think he'll be guided. He's not impulsive. I think he'll do the right thing."

Mitchell and his wife are both retired, according to Cortez. She said Mitchell used to work as a technician at St. Agnes Hospital.

Down the road, Elinor Smith said she doesn't know her neighbor. But she offers these words of advice: "Be wise. We find so many people that get millions and millions of dollars, and in five years they are flat broke and they don't know what happened."
