Three people died in a four car crash near the town of Caruthers. Officers are looking for one of the drivers who fled the scene.

It happened at the intersection of Floral Avenue and Elm. CHP says an Apria Healthcare box truck ran through the stop sign and it set off a chain reaction.

"It collided with the Chrysler Town and Country mini van. That mini van spun around and struck the Chevrolet Avalanche," Axel Reyes with CHP said.

Four cars were involved in the accident. Three people in the mini van died at the scene and another was air lifted to CRMC. Three others were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver who failed to stop at the stop sign was not injured.

Sonny Gill saw the accident and lives nearby. He called 911 and tried to help the victims. He said it was the worst accident he's ever seen.

"I went up to the driver side to see if he was okay and the whole van was pushed up on him. He wasn't moving at all," Gill said.

One driver, a Hispanic male in his late 40's fled the scene. He was driving a Chevy Avalanche truck. CHP believes he is injured and they searched for him using a helicopter. They don't believe he was at fault in the accident.

"We are just concerned for the welfare of that person. We haven't determined their suspected at all in the crash," Reyes said.

People in the area say the area is prone to accidents because of the 2-way stop.

"They really need to do something about it," Gill said. Maybe put flashing lights or put in a four way stop. They need to do something there are at least two or three accidents every month."
