Police spent close to sixteen hours at the canal south of Dakota Avenue at Cedar in Central Fresno.

They started their search around midnight after a call came into our newsroom that a baby's body had been thrown into the canal several days ago. Another call was made to police a short time later. Officers searched the canal.

"What they did find is some sort of tissue that is decomposing," said Lt. Mark Salazar with the Fresno Police Department.

Investigators say that tissue was encased in cement.
And the coroner confirms it belongs to an infant.

The Department of Justice assisted police as they also searched an apartment.
The Cambridge Court apartments on Dakota back up to that canal.
We spoke to one neighbor who's lived in the apartments for the past four years.

"It's very scary, very scary neighborhood," she said.

Police spent hours at one apartment and talked to the woman who lives there.
Residents told us detectives also searched the maintenance room in the complex.
Police have not name any suspects but say they are questioning several people.

"We have started talking to people, we have some people we're talking to now," Lt. Salazar said.

An autopsy on the infant is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
