A woman and man are dead following a deadly fight that led to an officer involved shooting in Southwest Fresno.

Fresno Police were called to apartments on El Dorado around 12:00 p.m. Monday. A man and woman were fighting and had thrown a 3-year-old child out the window. The quarrel sparked a neighbor to call 911.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says officers arrived within three minutes of the call. They heard a woman screaming from the home, Dyer says.

"They also heard a male make a comment that he has a knife and that he was going to stab her," Dyer says.

Dyer says his officers had to force their way into the home and meanwhile the screaming had stopped. Once inside officers saw a 45-year-old woman on the ground with multiple stab wounds, according to Dyer.

"There was a confrontation between the male who had been armed with a knife and one of the officers fired four rounds striking the suspect," Dyer says.

The 47-year-old suspect died.

Chief Dyer says the officer that shot the suspect is a veteran with the department and will be put on paid administrative leave, which is standard, during the investigation. The officer will also receive counseling.

"What he just went through is extremely traumatic," Dyer says, " Unfortunately, within less than a minute of the officers arriving this female was killed and the officers did everything they can to intercede but it was very apparent that this male suspect was determined to kill this female and he did."

The 3-year-old boy is ok. After leaving the apartment he was kept at the apartment office building, police say. Police have not released if the child is related to the victim or suspect.

Police have not released the name of the suspect but they say he was arrested earlier this year on domestic violence involving the same women. Chief Dyer adds that he was also on parole for assault with a deadly weapon charge from 2001. Dyer says that incident also involved domestic violence with a different woman.

Dyer says the couple was romantically involved but they aren't sure if they were dating at the time.
