Mendota Brothers Latest Victims In Rising Number of Fatal Accidents

Cailfornia Highway Patrol says there have already been 36 fatal accidents in 2014 in Fresno County. That's more than all fatal accidents in 2013.
Lisandro Rodriguez, 7, and Danny Rodriguez, 10, from Mendota are the latest victims in a rising number of deadly accidents in Fresno County. California Highway Patrol says there have been 36 fatal accidents in Fresno County in 2014. In 2013, there were 35 fatal accidents in Fresno County.

"Our increase in fatals is horrible," says California Highway Patrol Captain Dave Paris.

The Rodriguez brothers were hit and killed by a drunk driver on Sunday according to Highway Patrol. Two others, Belkys Rodriguez and Sineon Uong, were also killed in the crash. Highway Patrol says Rien Ban was drunk and driving his SUV on Highway 180 outside Kerman when he tried to pass a slow car. Instead, troopers say the SUV hit a Kia head on. Four people were killed and two people were flown to the hospital.

Ban will be charged with four counts of vehicle manslaughter along with driving while under the influencing causing bodily injury. Fresno County District Attorney's office says they may add charges or amend the current charges depending on what the Highway Patrol's investigation finds.

Ban has three prior D. U. I. convictions. The first was in 1990, then 2000 and finally in 2006.

Captain Paris wants everyone to be more cautious on the road, pay better attention and look out for each other to help prevent future accidents.

"Families take the initiative, friends take the initiative; when someone's been drinking don't let them get behind a wheel, take the keys from them, do something to stop it," Captain Paris says.
