A man is hospitalized with serious burns after a house fire in Mendota.

Firefighters were called to a home on Juanita street around seven Monday night.

The fire station is just a few minutes away from the scene of the fire.

So crews arrived quickly after calls were made to 911.

And that quick response likely saved a man's life.

Fire trucks filled Juanita street in Mendota.

Maria Louisa Garcia lives in the house that caught fire.

She was at her neighbors when it started.

"She said when she was arriving she noticed all the neighbors were outside and by her house," a family member translated for Garcia.

Smoke poured out of her home.

She says two friends were staying with her and her husband.

One of the men was inside the house unconscious when fire crews arrived

"The crews immediately began rescuing an individual from within the structure. The person was airlifted to a hospital in Fresno with significant burns and injuries," said Ryan Michaels with Cal Fire Fresno County.

The man suffered burns to his face and hands and possibly his lungs.

Fire crews say there were no working smoke detectors in the house. So it was a good thing that neighbors were watching out for each other and called 911.

The fire was started accidentally. Investigators say a lighter caught a pile of clothing on fire.
