"You have taken from us someone beautiful, kind and loving," reads one of Krista Pike's Aunts in court Friday.

Pike's family asked the judge to sentence Dustin Gran to life in prison without parole for killing Krista. It's the maximum penalty and Judge Marie Sovey Silveira in Madera County agreed it was the right decision. She says Gran never showed any kind of remorse.

"The evidence proved that Mr. Gran committed this murder because he wanted to," Judge Silveira says.

Pike's family rejoiced after the sentencing. They could be seen hugging and smiling outside the courtroom.

"It feels like a large weight has been lifted off our shoulders; it's given us the opportunity for closure," says Pike's Dad, Russel Pike.

Pike was only 18-years-old and she was days away from becoming an aunt when she was killed.

'Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays were all changed," Russel Pike told the judge.

Gran was found guilty by a jury in March 2014. He killed Pike in an attack allegedly planned by another teen, 17-year-old Brittany Navarro. Navarro was charged as an adult for her role. She's scheduled to go to trial next month.
