On Friday, June 27, 2014, at 3:50 pm, patrol officers responded to an armed robbery at 5665 E Kings Canyon, Joyeria Marlenes. Officers learned that two suspects walked into the jewelry store and posed as customers. After a couple minutes, the first suspect pulled out a handgun and racked the slide. He pointed the handgun at the victim and demanded money. The second suspect got on his cell phone and tried to jump behind the counter, but he fell down instead. He got back up and walked around the display counter. The owner of the business was in the back office with his daughter and newborn grandchild when he heard the victim, his cousin, saying they were getting robbed. The owner came out of the office armed with a shotgun, ready to protect his family.
The second suspect was the first to see the owner with the shotgun, so he fell to his knees and crawled toward the door. He yelled for the first suspect to shoot the victims. The first suspect was startled that the owner was armed and both suspects fled the store, running eastbound out of the business complex. Luckily, no one was injured during this violent attempt robbery.
On July 1, 2014, Detective Brandi Phebus received several tips regarding the identity of the suspects involved.  On July 2, 2014, the Robbery Felony Unit responded to Modesto California and served two search warrants with the assistance of the Modesto Police Department.  Evidence from the robbery was recovered as a result of these search warrants.
On July 3, 2014, a seventeen year old suspect turned himself into the Fresno Police Department and was interviewed by Detective Phebus.  The name and photo of the juvenile will be with held due to his age.  The suspect was later booked into Fresno County Juvenile Hall on attempted robbery charges.
Detective Phebus identified Edgar Yepez as the second suspect in the attempted robbery.  Yepez is a 16 year old juvenile and is considered armed and dangerous.  Yepez was last known to reside in the City of Modesto.  No photo is available on Yepez.
