Preliminary work for high speed rail has started in Madera County. Engineers are building a test column that will go into the ground. It'll provide information that will be used to finalize plans for a bridge over the Fresno River. The bridge is part of the first phase of construction, 29 miles of track between Madera and Fresno Counties. HSR officials say ground could break on the project by the end of summer.
