Police say it started as a fight at the Mendocino Liquor store at Mendocino and Parlier Streets, and ended as a stabbing outside the victim's apartment...just across the street.
Lemor Abrams is live at Community Regional Medical Center where the victim is recovering.
Luis Gonzalez was on his way to the Mendocino Liquor store when a group of men got into a fight with a local mechanic in his mid-thirties.
"I just passed by right here and just seen cops and everything," said Gonzalez.
Police tell us six men followed the mechanic to his apartment across the street, and stabbed him...multiple times, in the head, neck and back...then ran.
There was a trail of blood outside his doorstep.
"I believe he tried following...to see which way they were going... So the trail of blood is him trying to follow the people who stabbed him," said Sgt. Thomas Rodriguez.
Only two officers responded to the stabbing. Sgt. Rodriguez says it's a result of recent budget cuts.
And just after the attack, there was a drive-by shooting down the street off Academy and South Streets.
One neighbor who goes by "Daniel" has resorted to listening to a scanner on his iphone. He downloaded the app.
"I have to watch my own back and protect my family because by the time the police come...you know you have to protect your own," said Daniel.
Police say the don't have enough manpower to search for the suspects who stabbed the mechanic.
For now, Gonzalez is keeping a low profile."I walk around and go back home right away," he said.
