Gaston Middle School opens for the first time

It's been a long time waiting for Southwest Fresno, for 35 years there hasn't been a neighborhood middle school in Southwest Fresno in close to four decades.

It's been a long time waiting for Southwest Fresno.

35 years to be precise, since 1979, there has not been a neighborhood middle school a full middle school here in southwest fresno in 3 1/2 decades.

The school principal Steve Gonzalez says, this project was five years in the making and their vision was completed this summer. Before this school was built, Southwest students had to travel miles just to go to school, now they don't have to travel too far.

Gonzalez says bussing is going to be dramatically reduced in Fresno unified, for the last several decades children  from Southwest Fresno have been bussed out to other middle schools all over the district, now they're walking distance for the majority of our students.

History teacher Courtney Curtis tells us with the volume of students in the area more classrooms and teachers were needed. It's going to be nice that the students can actually have a place to call home.
Gonzalez says what makes this new middle school so unique is it's size and the resources available on campus.

Now for a traditionally underserved segment of the community the long wait is finally over. Families are excited for Back-to-School and the first day of school starts August 18th.
