Fresno mayor Ashley Swearengin opened her office for her State Controller campaign.

She faces five opponents, including another Republican.

Swearengin is in her second term as Fresno's mayor.

But she has her eyes set on Sacramento.

And at this point she is leading in the polls for the state controller's race.

Swearengin spent Tuesday evening greeting supporters at her new campaign office in downtown Fresno.

"Well it's tax day and in honor of tax day we're officially kicking off my campaign," Swearengin said.

She still has two years left in office as Fresno's mayor. And is still running the city while she runs for state controller.

"Well it's double duty right now, but of course being mayor comes first. And we are fitting in campaign activities nights and weekends," Swearengin said.

Swearengin holds the lead in the latest polls in the race against Assembly Speaker John Perez and Betty Yee, who sits on the Board of Equalization. Both Perez and Yee are Democrats.

Our legal analyst says - don't read too much into the polls.

"One Republican against two Democrats. It's kind of natural that she would be leading at this point. It's where she's leading in November that really counts," said analyst Don Larson.

Swearengin plans to spend the next two months trying to get her message out to voters.

I think people understand the importance of having a business-friendly environment in California. We need jobs more than anything else. Today our tax system is so complicated that we are literally driving businesses out of this state," Swearengin said.

The primary is June 3rd. The top two candidates will face off in November unless one gets more than 50 percent of the vote.
