Fresno State students gathered on campus pledging to help stop unwanted sexually advances on campus. It's a pledge they want everyone to take.

Students were read the following pledge than put their handprint on a banner as a symbol that they will keep that promise.

'I pledge, on my honor, that I will not commit any act of sexual violence. I also pledge that I will do everything in my power to safely intervene when I see inappropriate sexual conduct or a sexual assault occur or about to occur."

The event comes at the end of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and right after a new study was released by the a White House Task Force to Protect Students From Sexual Assault. The report says one in five women is sexually assaulted in college.

Fresno State's Women's Resource Center Interim Director Jessica Adams says events like their pledge can help empower victims to come forward so they can start to heal.

"Sometimes just saying 'do you need help?' will let them know that they're not alone and it's ok," Adams says.

Adams stresses that sexual assault is never a victim's fault. That message is reiterated in a new PSA from the White House featuring some big celebrities. We have the link for that PSA below.

Sexual assault isn't just a college campus problem. Monte Jewell, the executive director with Rape Counseling Services Fresno says sexual assault comes in many different forms.

"If someone is making someone uncomfortable or frightened, that's not ok," Jewell says.

Anyone can be a victim, no matter what age or gender. Advocates say if everyone becomes aware the violence can be reduced dramatically.
