The Fresno County Sheriff's Office announced the passing of K-9 Rico.

Rico had a tumor that was inoperable. And his quality of life had deteriorated significantly.

His partner, Eric Petersen, was by Rico's side when the K-9 was euthanized Sunday by the veterinarian for the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say Rico was an asset to the Sheriff's Office. He was assigned to the patrol bureau.

Rico was a ten-year-old Malinois who served the citizens of Fresno County for eight years. Rico was a fierce protector of the community and was responsible for numerous arrests of suspects.

And he was a beloved member of the Peterson family.
