Fresno apartment fire leaves 19 people homeless

Dozens of people were evacuated to safety after an apartment unit went up in flames.
Firefighters battled an apartment fire just before noon Saturday near Tulare and F Street.

That fire left 19 people homeless.

The blaze broke out on the second story of a building that sits just above a business.

It was scenario firefighters called a "worst nightmare".

"This was a significant fire, one unit was completely involved and it was spreading to other apartment units on the second floor of the building," said Chuck Tobias, Fresno Fire Department.

Fire crews responded in force and were able to evacuate everyone from the complex. No injuries were reported.

At least one unit was completely destroyed and others damaged.

The cause remains under investigation.
