A Fresno father is recovering after pushing his daughter out of the way of an oncoming truck.

The accident happened Sunday night around 11:00 p.m. at the intersection of Jensen and Willow. Fresno police say a suspected drunk driver in a white GMC truck side-swept a car stopped at a red light heading west on Jensen. At the same time the truck hit a 49-year-old man who was crossing the street with his daughter.

"I heard this horrific scream; "daddy, daddy," I mean just as loud as anyone can scream and I ran to the fence and looked out there and there was a man laying in the middle of the street," says Kathy Arevalo who called 911 with her husband.

The truck kept going, crossing over a cement median and getting stuck on a curb. Police say the driver took off and they rushed the victim to Community Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

"We prayed for the family right then," says Thomas Arevalo.

Police say the victim saved his daughter's life.

"He pushed his daughter out of the way so she wouldn't get hurt by the truck," says Lt. Joe Gomez with Fresno Police.

"He's willing to give his life for her," says Thomas, "Very commendable."

Fresno Police say the driver turned himself in Monday.
